Remains of the Crashed Plane (or: “What happened to R2?”)
August 18th, 2008 by Plat

If the title makes no sense to you, the rest probably won’t either.

Now, for the rest of you who might be looking for Rock 2: Crashed Plane stuff, here’s what’s left.

Q: Where can I play Rock 2?
A: Dillfrog.com no longer hosts the game, but other generous fellows seem to still host the game. If you’re feeling lucky, try Mindreader’s server (telnet host: rock2mimic.tzo.com, port: 4000)

Q: How can I get the Rock 2 source code?
A: It’s pretty ugly; I never wrote it expecting it to be released. But it’s released on SourceForge as “RockServ 2″. Instructions are on the RockServ Wiki

Q: How can I get the Rock 1 source code?
A: It is not released yet, and may not be ever. It’s that bad. But if it were released, it’d be on SourceForge’s RockServ wiki as well.

Ok, so I am trying to get Rock running on my server through cPanel. I grabbed up the CVS from rockserv at sourceforge.

I am having a couple problems though – I can’t SSH into the server because I don’t have that access. How do I run a perl script without SSH? I set up the mysql database and all that. . .

Second and third problems are similar: where are the auth.pm and rock_prefs.pm? Gone completely? They aren’t in the CVS or SVC. Are they still required or did something change and the current install wiki out of date?

  4. Dave Says:

Great, thanks. Well, I was going to open a good server for the public for Rock, but I don’t get moderated and it doesn’t matter apparently. I got other things to do.

someone should consider putting up a website and getting ppl to play this again. i would but i know nothing about that stuff best i could do was spam game forums with the connect info. its too bad i really wanna play this again but its just not the same without the population it used to have.

    thank you

Do you happen to still have the old tracks you did for ROCK? I only have real audio format and I’m having a hard time converting them to a modern format (mp3)… whatever “album” consisted of the great american wig out, what i’ve become, crashed plane, etc.

  12. Plat Says:

    @Master:

Some of those songs are at http://noise.dillfrog.com/ (e.g. Cold Dub is at http://noise.dillfrog.com/songs/170)

If you want, you’re welcome to email me a full list and I’ll dig up what I can. (Bonus points if you send me the RAs, since some names have changed.)
