Legacy.dillfrog.com to disappear
April 5th, 2008 by Plat

The legacy is coming to a close. Dilly (the legacy.dillfrog.com server) is dying, his Internet service will be in flux, and it’s probably time for a fresh start. (Or a stale end).

Sometime mid-May, the stuff hosted on legacy.dillfrog.com will be temporarily or permanently unavailable. So if there’s any content you want to download/archive/etc, please slurp it within the next month.

Sites unaffected: all non-legacy.dillfrog.com stuff. Includes Sourceforge sites (e.g. salp wars, rockserv, frogjam projects), noise.dillfrog.com, blog.dillfrog.com, wurdles.com, funputer.com, etc.

Stuff that will probably live on (though with a multi-month blackout period): encoding tools, guitar chorder, rhymer, songfight explorer, hop to it, album tracker.

Stuff that probably won’t live on: everything else. Includes account system (your login ID, profiles, pictures, etc), forums, tetrinet server, rock 1/2/3, rejoinder, frogjam server, hang, and most of the other experiments.

If there’s something you really don’t want me to kill off, or if you’re looking for source code, please respond in the comments of this post. (But please be specific). I already have a pretty good idea which pages get the most traffic. If you’re a reader of this blog, you probably aren’t using those pages. :)

Sorry for the inconvenience.

UPDATE June 2 2008: Want to be notified when the Rhymer tool is available again? Then I reckon you join the FrogMuse Announcement mailing list. The snarky-quiet mailing list with a stuffy name.

I guess I’ll have to find a new homepage. >.>

OMG the dillfrog legacy is over….sad to hear, although a lot of us have moved on….this game was a huge part in most of our lives….was a good run…over 10 years i think….in a sense kind of sad to find myself here haha…anywho plat (tyler) good to of known you in some sense. IF you feel like getting in contact with some of the old guys…mindreader does host a version of your game would be amazeing to see you show up sometime to talk about old times….rock2mimic.tzo.com port 4000….there are about 10 of us or so that still play…although it will never be the same it is there and is playable and also enjoyable….well with that being said….goodbye old friend and perhaps we might see you again….(or with a suprize on mindreader’s version :) ) eitherway was nice to have been part of your legacy that is dillfrog…may it live forever!!!

  3. Plat Says:

Ahh! Thanks for the server info. I’ll be sure to mention the rock2mimic server when linking to the remains. (That page will get a facelift, I promise).

I’m not sure which R2 stuff wasn’t released with the “rockserv” code, but if there’s something I held back before, and you still want it, let me know.

  4. Thyrr Says:

Aww … I guess it’s been pretty quiet for the last couple years but it’s been sort of reassuring seeing the old legacy page every once in a while. Well, so long, and thanks for all the dillfrogs!

I’m interested in the R1 source code — I’d love to revive it some day (at least in spirit, if not the original Perl) but no promises; I still have a big pile of MUD ideas dating back to 2002.

Rejoinder was ahead of its time, although Web 2.0 dictates that it has needs tons of AJAX, Facebook integration, tag clouds, etc., before anyone will look at it. The sentence-at-a-time flow feels a lot more approachable than some of the more literary collaborative storytelling sites, and also less like anyone “owns” a particular plot line. I’d love for it live on in some form, but getting people to participate regularly (myself included) is quite a challenge.

Well, best wishes Plat, and good luck on whatever you’re starting on next.

  5. Foxy Says:

Thanks for all your hard work over the years Plat (Plate), and of course much respect to your fellow founders.

It has been a journey… in more ways than one ha ha!

R2 had a great community and I wish everyone best wishes for the future. I am afraid I have been tainted for life, I still sign off emails and Im’s sometimes with a *pkiss* or a *bonk* :P …. and I had to write a class the other day to join two sets of search results together… and of course the logical class name was:

    public class (myAppNameHere)Rejoiner{

Could I also have the R1 code?, I believe I have the R2 stuff somewhere already.

I am still in contact with a handful of people from Rock with is very cool… the WoW generation just dont get it!!!!! lol

Good luck with the move……and everything that you do :P

  6. Morbis Says:

I would also like to get a hold of the r1 source code for legacy purposes.

For anyone who would like to get in touch with me in the future you can contact me in Guildwars under the name Morbis Grimblade or via AIM at morbis02 or a jferdett at vt dot edu

  7. Brian Mingus Says:

A tarball would be greatly appreciated. There are lots of dark corners for wget to get stuck in on the legacy server. I’d like to host a copy on the RockServ wiki

  8. Brian Mingus Says:

Whee, I downloaded dillfrog (1.6GB!) and 7zipped it to only 20MB (!). If anyone wants it shoot me an e-mail.

  9. isaak Says:

I used the rhymer: sounds page all the time and now can’t find it. Is it still here somewhere? Or is there something I can download where I can still use the program? Please let me know. Thanks.

  10. Steve C Says:

I would really like to have rhymer, chorder, and the encoding tools on my computer. Is there any way to do that? Was I just not paying attention? Is there anyone who can make a program out of it to download or something?

  11. John Says:

I think rhymer is the best.

I’d love it if you’d broadcast an email when it’s available again.

    Thanks!

  12. Plat Says:

@isaak: Rhymer is essentially offline for now, sorry. I use that a lot too, so rest assured it’ll be one of the first things to come back up when I have the opportunity to do so.

@SteveC: Good question about offline usage. Chorder should be as simple as “Save Page As…”, since it’s just HTML + Javascript (I think). Rhymer’s a little trickier. I have a java prototype, but it’s too resource-intensive (and ambitious) to release to the general public. I’d be happy to release my data files in case any of you is an ambitious programmer though :-) .

@John: Absolutely. I’ll e-mail you when Rhymer is available. Depending on the response here, I might set up an e-mail announcement list, but so far it seems like we’re just a small crowd so i can keep it old-fashioned.

  13. isaak Says:

Hey Plat can you email me if you get a chance? I have a bunch of questions about Rhymer but it’s too detailed for comments. I couldn’t find a link to your email on the page here. Thanks – Isaak

  14. Tom Payne Says:

Pleeeeease let me know when the Rhymer is back on line. I use it all the time.

    Thanks

  15. Rhymer Says:

    Damn, I need the rhymer.

Can you send me the tool. Write soon so that I can give you my e-mail.

  16. Vance Decker Says:

If you can, keep the following post:

Another Stupid Patent: Emerson SmartSet (R)
by Plat on Thursday January 1, 11:43PM

I’m doing a whole round-up of SmartSet/AutoSet/InstaSet Scam Atomic Clocks and wanted to link to you…How Annoying! …the clocks that is…

  17. Plat Says:

Okay, guess I’ll be making a Rhymer announcement mailing list after all, when time allows. If you already asked to be notified, consider yourself on that list.

@Vance: hey, I remember that post. Good times. I just added it to my blog so it should live on for quite some time. Thanks for bringing that back up!

  18. Logan Says:

I’d like to see the Rhymer stay up.
Add me to the mailing list. :)

  19. Matt Says:

Long live the Rhymer! But if not, then add me to the mailing list! Thanks for everything.

  20. Plat Says:

Alright! The mailing list exists, and I have DSL again. Now I just have to port the old Rhymer code over to something Dreamhost can handle.

You can subscribe/unsubscribed to the mailing list via:

    http://muse.dillfrog.com/contact/announcement-list/

I kick-started registration with the few of you who asked for it.

  21. evad Says:

im looking for the source code for rock II….any help is appreciated

  22. Eman Says:

So the rhymer will no longer be available? :(

  23. Plat Says:

@Eman: Not in its previous form. I’ll spare you the details, but I’m slowly making it available in a different form. Unfortunately I also have a full-time job, so things are slow here. But I recommend joining the mailing list if you haven’t yet.

  24. Andrew Says:

please tell me I can somehow download the rhymer?

  25. KL Says:

That rhymer is the best ever. I’ve joined the mailing list. You will make this stranger very happy if you find the time to let me know when it exists again. :-)

  26. AlienGodz Says:

Hey Plat its been a long while. I have always been interested in the past in the R1 source code. I really enjoyed that game way back when, and i am still interested in obtaining the full source code, so i can re-host the game (if you allow me too) and see if i can get an audience for it again. I finally have time to learn C++ so i can create one of my own in a similar context. But in the mean while i thought it would be nice to have the original too for ideas and tips/help if i ever get stumped.

If you would like to talk more about this, please feel free to email me and we can talk more about it there.

  27. blau Says:

the ache for rhymer is profound

anything we can do to help….can we order a copy that would work on something else (my pc??)

  28. DoVoN Says:

man……plat….toothpaste….chupa…foxy….its been many of years, as i do not know what my rock 2 name was, i played the game almost 10 years ago, and off and on and, today playing r2 on mind readers server…i cant wait to see what happens with rock, good to hear from you all again

  29. AlienGodz Says:

Plat man, its been a month, and i have yet to hear from you in regards to R1. According to your dillfrog.com page, it says to contact you for anything we would like to get archival purposes. While yes archiving is not my sole purpose, but having the old code will make it easier for me to in an essence recreate the game.

    Let me know please :)

  30. Nekromancer Says:

    Goodnight, sweet prince.

  31. Angela Says:

i want it now u guys are da best

  32. Mike Says:

Is anyone planning on making a mirror server of any of the Rock games, especially Rock 2? Or is there already another server that I can play the game on?

  33. RAZETHEDEAD Says:

I would like the source code for R2. i remember it as the BEST game ive ever played and if i can get it back up and running Id be a super happy man. Also have alot of friends who think the same, and if i get the code, it can never be shut down and lost to us.

  34. Mike Says:

Oh, and can someone please post some urls to sites where I can play Rock 2? I really consider it one of the best MUDs ever made (and I’ve played a ton of MUDS, too). It’s kind of depressing to see it simply disappear off the face of the earth.

Also, if anyone wanted to share any sites where I can play Rock 1, and Rock 3, that would be cool. I never got a chance to play those verison, so it would be interesting to play to try them. Thanks!

  35. razethedead Says:

Ok so are there any other websites that have Rock2 info on them? im trying to get some friends back to playing it and there are some questions we (I) need reanswered. :D
it would be neat to note the changes mindreader has made to the game. inquiring nubs want to know.

Mike: get on telnet(located on every comp) and connect to rock2mimic.tzo.com 4000 (

BTW brian how do we email u for ziped dillfrogsite?

  37. DerDeutsche Says:

Hey, it’s a pity. The rhyme generator was earlier better.
The rhymes were more precise and there was much more words.

I love rhymes like: skyline – lifetime: both syllables rhyme

    Update this, please.

When u did it, send me an E-mail.

    good luck!

  38. Caleb Says:

hey i’ve tried to connect to rock2mimic.tzo.com port 4000 and i always get a winsock error. is there a way to fix this or am i just out of luck? Also, hit me up with some links to rock 2 mirror sites if any are still around.
